IBM brand guidelines

IBM Design Language provides public guidelines, specifications, and downloadable assets covering typography, iconography, grids, and accessibility.

Freedam's take — I love browsing the IBM Design Language site because it shows how a massive corporate system can stay disciplined without losing clarity. The documentation connects typography, iconography, and color directly back to open assets and real tools. I noticed how deeply they treat IBM Plex, right down to non-Latin scripts and interactive testers. Even technical guidelines like stroke weight, corner radius, and color blindness checks feel integrated into everyday practice rather than treated as an afterthought. It feels like an honest manual made by designers who actually build things every day.

  3. The color section provides downloadable swatches alongside guidelines on contrast ratios and color blindness.20212223
  4. Pictograms and UI icons link directly to starter and master vector files hosted across public and internal GitHub repositories.24252627

What I could not see

  • Could not access internal IBM GitHub links that require company authentication.
  • Did not capture complete subpages under Carbon Design System, Event Design, or Workplace Design.

Ideas to borrow

  1. Distribute icon and pictogram source files directly via GitHub repositories alongside usage specifications to streamline asset handoffs.2425
